This is funny stuff….

So, we’ve got Pagans arguing with other Pagans about whether or not Christianity stole holidays from ancient Pagans.

I was trawling the net for interesting stuff to bitch about (Gods, my life sucks) and I came across this interesting conversation. It links to the original conversation with which this guy ran. So you don’t have to go through reading the tedium (if you don’t want to) I’ll copy and paste a little bit:

Original poster: (second link)

association with the right deity?
A christian can no more prove the existence of their god than I can prove the existence of my gods and goddesses, which is intriguing to me why everything science digs up to support biblical claims is automatically associated with the god mentioned in the bible. Can evidence be provided to disassociate each and every one of these findings from every pagan god and goddess? While Christians claim that their God is the opriginal god, this is not true when compared to the facts of the matter. The facts reveal that pagan gods and goddesses were worshipped far earier. So what say you to that? Where is the factual evidence to prove that bible stories really belong to the god mentionedin the bible? Christmas doesn’t belong associated with Jesus’ birthday because he wasn’t born on December 25. To steal the thunder of pagan’s winter solstace, it was claimed as Christmas. What is to stop these people from doing the same things to all the rest of the biblical writings?

And the argument proceeds from there. Well, the one guy (from the first link) wasn’t satisfied to leave it here so he took it to another community with this:

Here’s a fluffy pagan post for you:

Okay, so I’m going to throw this question to you, the educated “elite” of pagans. How many pagan stories are there of a monotheistic god incarnating himself, and dying so as to remove the sins of the whole world? And for that matter, how many pagan belief systems assume original sin? Also, is there even a need in most pagan belief systems for “salvation”, as Christians understand it — hence requiring a prior pagan “story”?

I understand if you are annoyed about a post having to do with Christianity. However, I thought that rather than assuming anything about every pagan belief system, I will try to find someone whose beliefs coincide with [info]foreverfearless’s claims.

Oh, and just so you know, Gnosticism doesn’t count. It has to be a belief system from a non-Abrahamic faith.

Now why do I find this so funny? Well, first of all it proves my point I was trying ot make in “What the…?”. That there are a lot of need Pagans. “Well, this is the stupid shit she said and then this is the stupid response I posted…” Yeah, we get it. One guy finds someone who makes no sense to him then dances around the “prove-it” tree while the other person resorts to personal attacks because guy “a” couldn’t just ignore the thread.

Ok, I admit that sometimes I attack Christianity for no other reason than I’m in the mood. But I do that here and, since no one is reading me, it seems pretty private. I don’t go to the Christians and try to bait them. Hell, if I really wanted to do that I’d just go ahead and bait the family (loads of Christians in the family tree).
I think that arguing that Christianity is made up of a hodge-podge of little things from other belief systems is probably accurate. But is that something so terrible?

I am a professed eclectic. This, to me, means that most of my beliefs come from somewhere else and none of them belong together. So, I have to make them fit together in my own little religion. Now, maybe Christianity started as a small eclectic religion that just made a lot of sense to people. Then it grew and someone decided that it was a good way to control the masses. A lot of the masses held onto their pagan beliefs, so the Church found a way to integrate those (pagan)beliefs into Christianity, so that these poor ignorant folk would honesty believe there was only one true religion. Why doesn’t this make sense? Of course, I would never try to argue with a Christian about this…lol…unless I was drunk and looking for a good fight.

I think that the original poster went about stated his/her argument all wrong. And I think that the other guy was wrong to rise to the bait. But I think that the original point has some validity. Why does science always look for some kind of proof that the Bible is real? I think that science isn’t looking for proof, but looking to debunk the bible as absolute proof. So many people take the bible literally and, I believe, some scientists just want to set them straight. Of course, they can’t come right out and say this. That would be too controversial. And controversy of this nature should, of course, be fed to the devote one spoonful at a time. I say to foreverfearless, just quit worrying about it. Why scream into a bowl of jello? It just doesn’t make sense.
