Newly elected House leader Boehner is opposing banning privately funded travel for members of Congress and provisions in spending bills that fund lawmakers’ pet projects. Boy, that’s surprising. A Republican opposing funding from lobbyists. Who would have thunkit?
“In the past, when these scandals have erupted, what’s happened is Congress has overreacted, and two days later nobody knew what happened,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.” He said he would favor more disclosure of dealings with lobbyists but would not seek complete bans on travel or “earmark” provisions. “Bringing more transparency to this relationship, I think, is the best way to control it. But taking actions to ban this and ban that, when there’s no appearance of a problem, there’s no foundation of a problem, I think, in fact, does not serve the institution well.”
Huh? There’s no appearance of a problem? Tell that to Jack Abramoff or Mike DeWine (R-Ohio). Or anyone else involved with taking money for political favors. Of course, I may have it wrong. Maybe free air travel to lands far away doesn’t qualify as money. I mean, doesn’t everyone get to go to Scotland for free every once in a while? Or eat expensive dinners at no cost- just to get a bill introduced? Sounds reasonable to me. Of course, I can’t introduce or vote yea or nay, so I don’t qualify for the program. Obviously Rep. Boehner does and seems to be looking forward to reaping the rewards of his new post.
