The headlines say that President Bush didn’t know that the mikes were still on after he had reporters leave his “retreat” with Congressional Republicans. And so the public was able to hear some of his “private” remarks about the NSA program. Poor silly president.
The fact that “his private statements were basically no different from what he’s said in public” makes me think that he fully intended for those microphones to stay on. He wants us to think he’s a charming bumbler, but I think this was just as staged as his town hall meetings. Would the president’s men actually allow the world to eavedrop on one of his private pep talks? Of course not. Unless they wanted to world to hear something seemingly private.
This could very well be a tactic to bolster support for his program. And his hurting Bush-bots in Congress. Afterall, if he’s saying the same thing in private that he says in public he must be telling the truth. Right?
This, to me, is tantamount to a wife suspecting that her husband is reading her journal. So she writes some stuff he may (or may not) like then “accidentally” leaves it lay out where he’s certain to find it. And the poor naive husband is caught red-handed snooping into his wife’s private space. I know that GWB isn’t trying to catch anyone listening, he’s depending on someone listening. It’s the same kind of control mechanism.
It’s just too bad that it seems to work so often. And not even the most astute journalist will call him out on his ploy. But then maybe it’s not as obvious as I think it is. Maybe I’m a little more conniving than the rest of America.
The handlers of GWB aren’t stupid. They wouldn’t let this happen if there wasn’t a reason for it. Every little “oops” the president makes has a reason behind it. Our own opinion polls are getting played like a game at the Mad Hatter’s tea party. And we’re losing.
