The Paul Hackett Controversy

I see that Paul Hackett is dropping out of the race for the Senate…no he’s not…sure he is… I’m not really sure what’s going on with these rumors making their way around and I didn’t get anything off of the Hackett For Ohio website. But it’s got the buzz making noise.

I would love to see Paul Hackett win the Senate seat. We need men like him, that aren’t going to cower in front of journalists and party bosses. We need someone who knows what’s going on in Iraq and isn’t going to keep quiet about it. Ohio needs him for his strength. Maybe with him more of our legislatures will become honorable again and get us out of this stinking toilet we’re in now. We certainly don’t need anymore “society” types representing us in Washington.

I didn’t know if he should just fight Schmidt for her seat, maybe he’d have a better chance at winning. But I’ve decided I’d rather he stayed in this race and continue to stand strong. I don’t like all this rumor-mill shit and bullying that’s going on by the Dems who are trying to get him to drop out. He’s making a real difference in how people are seeing politicians and I think that counts for something. He’s actually giving people hope that we don’t have to lie down and take this anymore. Not just in Ohio either. There are plenty of people in the blogosphere that support him. And we’re willing to do what we can to help him take Ohio.

Of course, some people think that it’s all about the money and Hackett’s doing a poor job of running his campaign (see Daily Kos comments). Aren’t we sick of money for politics and politics for money? Isn’t that what’s getting Ohio in so much trouble right now? Shouldn’t we back the underdog, even if he is a little bit poorer than his opponent? But then, they also say that he’s going to lose because OH-2 is largely Republican…hmmmmph.

Here’s a news flash for anyone not paying attention– Ohio is mired in corruption and people are sick of it. Our governor is a convicted criminal, one of our Reps (Bob Ney) is on his way to being indicted, we have “coin gate”, our economy is in the tank, our kids are not the best educated, our Secretary of State is a Bush front man, and, honestly, we’re looking for someone to do something about these astronomical heating bills. Even we backwaters can get fed up with national embarassment, corruption, and our own lack of money. Give us some credit, please.

There is good news though. The Plain Dealer blog mentions this craziness.

But former Sen. John Glenn, a one-time Marine fighter pilot and astronaut, has some political wisdom of his own for Hackett, a Marine Reserve major: Tune out what all the others are telling you. “All the people that want to advise you, tell ’em to save their breath.”

Glenn said in a telephone interview that if he had listened to the party’s wise men way back when, he might not have made it to the Senate.

Amen to that! What better support do you need? Well, voters (of course), but luckily, John Glenn is still respected in this backwater state. Maybe his word does mean something.

Now we just have to figure out how to beat Diebold in the next election.

UPDATE:
Paul Hackett speaks up at TPM Cafe. It’s a good read so check it out.
