Ohio’s not so bad afterall

Ohio isn’t fully in the dark ages!! This is good news.

First off there’s this:

COLUMBUS — House Speaker Jon Husted says he has a personal reason for not allowing a bill to move forward that would ban gay couples from adopting a child.

The normally private Husted said today in Columbus that he himself was adopted and he won’t allow any legislation that would put limits on adopting as long as needy children need homes.

Wooohooo! Someone is thinking clearly in Columbus (for once). Whew! I was getting afraid of going outside in my own state.

Then there’s this:

State board votes to eliminate disputed evolution lesson plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio school board voted Tuesday to eliminate a passage in the state’s science standards that critics said opened the door to the teaching of intelligent design.

The Ohio Board of Education decided 11-4 to delete material encouraging students to seek evidence for and against evolution.

The 2002 science standards say students should be able to “describe how scientists continue to investigate and critically analyze aspects of evolutionary theory.” The standards include a disclaimer that they do not require the teaching of intelligent design.

Now, I don’t want to really get into the ID crap again. But I’m glad that Ohio doesn’t have to follow Dover, PA down that dark road. Really, this is just more crap from the extreme fundamentalist Christians trying to get all of us to turn our souls over to Jesus…blah, blah, blah. I say to those who think that the Bible is science, or that scientists are full of it they should look in the Bible for references to the following (and if they don’t find them then they should join the nearest Amish sect and do without them):

  1. Clean water

  2. Electricity

  3. Microwave ovens

  4. Penicillin

  5. Heart Meds— Ok, any kind of meds

  6. Make-up

  7. Hair color

  8. I know this falls into the meds catagory but….VIAGRA

This list can go on forever, but….

I personally like science. And I’m not willing to do without the little conveniences that science has provided for me (especially my doctor or my baby’s doctors). I’m glad that Ohio hasn’t become an Amish state (yet).
