Senator May Seek Tougher Law on Leaks(free reg.required)
Ok, they were convinced not to investigate the president’s illegal spying on American citizens. Then they decided to make a law that would make it legal to spy on us- apparently it’s going to be retroactive so his highness doesn’t get anymore flak for being a criminal. Now this. If you tell the world that your president is a criminal- because you know first hand- well that makes you a criminal.
“I’ve often said a leak is not a leak in Washington until somebody gets wet, but we’re all in the swimming pool,” (Sen.Pat) Roberts (R-Kansas)said. Recalling the legislation Clinton vetoed, Roberts said, “Whether it’s a reporter or just any individual or somebody by the water cooler who’s upset or somebody who has just a very strong difference of opinion knowingly reveals classified information, that would be a felony.”
So now the president and his cronies are drowning in a swimming pool (a big ol’ vat of bullshit, if you ask me) and now the Senate must save him. What a better way to do that than to make bringing his illegal to light illegal unto itself.
A lawyer familiar with the AIPAC case said administration officials “want this case as a precedent so they can have it in their arsenal” and added: “This as a weapon that can be turned against the media.”
Absolutely. We don’t want anyone reporting on Abu Gharab, Gitmo, or things like the president committing crimes. We don’t want to worry the minds of those little Bush-bots who are sitting on the fence wondering if their loyaltys are in the right place (Bush v. the Constitution, which do you pick?). We certainly don’t want to give those pesky lefty bloggers anymore fuel for their fire. They’d shut the fuck up if the media only reported good things about the administration (because this has obviously been proved true).
But wait! If it’s illegal to release classified information and they want to broaden that scope, where does it leave our Dick? He seems to think it’s ok for him to leak classified information whenever he wants (especially if it’s to penalize an American agent because her husband exercises his free speech). Wouldn’t be at all possible to get him caught up in that net too? Probably not. His evilness probably is exempt from every part of every criminal code in the U.S. And if he’s not, well, he’ll make sure the law states “Except for Vice President Dick Cheney because he may need to punish someone who doesn’t like him.”
Over at the NY Times(free reg.req)there’s a great editorial about how Sen.Pat Roberts is Bush’s nanny, always keeping him safe and warm. It also addresses Sen.Roberts attempt to criminalize whistle-blowing at the federal level. But the best part is the last…
The last thing the nation needs is to amend the law to institutionalize the imperial powers Mr. Bush seized after 9/11.
Amen! It’s too bad they’re already working over time to do just that.
