My mother-in-law is pretty well off[1]. She makes about $250k a year and her husband makes about 100k a year. They live in a 3000 sq.ft. house sitting on an acre 1/2 lot, blah fucking blah. Anyway, that’s a lot around this gods-awful town.
So, she calls me today to tell me she just spent 2 hours with her accountant getting ready to file her taxes. She puts it off because usually she has to pay between $2000-3000 a year. Not this year.
It was worth it, though. I’m getting over $3000 back this year. Wow, I can’t even remember the last time I got a refund.
WTF? She has no dependents and is well over the limit for the Earned Income Credit. And she makes a butt-load of money. Plus her husband, who doesn’t have any dependents either, makes a butt-load of money. Again I ask WTF?
My problem with this is simple. My husband is the sole provider of our family. And he does ok, but annually makes less than $30k. He has 3 dependents, school deductions, huge medical deductions, etc. And yet our refund was less than $600.[2]
Hey, Republicans, you still think the tax breaks really benefit the average American? Perhaps if you make as much as or more than my mother-in-law you would- because you’re an ass. But if you’re tax return looks anything like my husband’s then you need to really think, think hard about supporting anyone that would make those fucking cuts permanent. Because while you’re just getting by (or struggling to get by) someone who spends over $2000+ a month[3] at Kohl’s and Dillards is getting a little extra spending money, courtesy of the Idiot-in-Chief.
You know, I wanted to be able to stay home with Baby until she started school, but it looks like we’d be better off if I got a job to help get more money. Considering the types of jobs available around this area, I’d only have to work 50 hours a week. Or my husband and I could get a divorce (then he could claim the EIC). Is that what they mean by “family values”?
Oh, dumbass me! They meant “wealthy family values”! Ok, then, I’ll stay home and be poor. And keep hoping that someday someone with some flippin’ sense will be elected to office.

[1] In my neck of the boondocks she’s damned well off.
[2] I know, at least we got a refund, but that’s not the point. Ok?
[3] We’re not even going to mention how much she spends a month for gas for her big-ass SUV. Think over $600.
