I want to say that I’m not one of those people that thinks celebrities have some kind of obligation to act like role models for children. That job belongs to parents, grandparents, extended family, etc. This is a reason I don’t really follow celebrity gossip and why I don’t normally write about that kind of thing. That being said, let’s talk about Rosie O’Donnell.
I’m not a fan of Rosie. I used to think that being loud and brash was part of her stage persona, until she came out and decided she was going to be all serious all the time. That sucked and I stopped paying attention to her. But sometimes she makes me laugh, and I don’t think she’d like the reasons why.
She’s on some high horse about American Idol and the judges being too mean. To be honest, it’s not just her. It’s the rest of The View. But there’s something that Rosie said that stands out a little:
“It’s terribly sad to me,” O’Donnell said during a harsh six-plus minute Idol attack broadcast on Thursday morning’s The View. “I don’t think America likes to watch people be ridiculed, made fun of, and called ugly monkeys, or that they’re too fat or they’re a degenerate… it’s an absurd concept that this is what’s tolerable now as consumption in America for mass media.” [source]
Something like that may have made sense during the showing of the very first auditions for AI, but that rings very hollow right now. Rosie’s so dead wrong. Why does she think so many people tune in for the auditions? To cast bets on who’s going to make it through? No. They want to see people fall flat on their faces. They want to point and laugh at the idiocy of it all. They see a train wreck and enjoy every flippin’ minute of it. And guess what? Most of the people that audition for that show know exactly what they’re getting into. Do they think that they’re going to be the ones getting famous for being untalented? Probably not. I’m sure they all think they’ve got talent oozing from every pore. But they expect, perhaps, that someone else will get the bad treatment, while we at home laugh and carry on and exclaim “Ohmygod! Can you believe she actually thinks she can sing?” When did this become some kind of secret that we didn’t share with each other? Um, never.
But let’s talk a little about Rosie and her attempts to garner the spotlight, or perhaps her inability to be as sensitive as she believes she is. She certainly doesn’t like to point and laugh at other people because of their real or perceived differences. Right?
The fact is that it’s news all over the world. You know, you can imagine in China it’s like, ‘Ching chong, ching chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong chong, drunk, The View, ching chong.”[source]
Of course, Rosie was being funny, so it was ok. After all, she’s a comedienne and wants people to understand that. How awful of them to think otherwise!
O’Donnell expressed surprise when she learned that some Asian Americans considered speaking in that kind of sing-song accent a grave insult. She sympathized with Asian Americans who were teased for their ancestral language while growing up.
However, O’Donnell warned that she is a comedian and does accents of all kinds, including Dec. 5’s, which she characterized as “Chinese, Asian, pseudo-Japanese, sounded a little Yiddish.”
Fine, fine. Just own your shit, Rosie. No one likes a god-damned militant hypocrite. You don’t like that some poor, fat kid from BFE, Wisconsin made fun of because he just knew he sounded like one of the Backstreet Boys and could dance better than Justin Timberlake got panned by the judges. Maybe you should blame whoever the hell it was that told that poor boy he could sing and dance to begin with. Now that’s who needs to be slapped.
Anyway, what was I going on about? Oh yes. I laugh and giggle just like anyone else. I even have to audacity to laugh at myself when I do something completely idiotic, because I usually ask for it. It’s ok to do that sometimes. When people put themselves in a situation that would almost definitely garner them that treatment it almost seems like they’re asking for it.
I think, though, if you don’t like it, don’t watch. Try to encourage your family and friends to stop watching (good luck with that one). But don’t be an asshole toward an entire group of people and then cry and bitch because “OMG! They were mean!”

I think they’re all greedy, limelight-hogging scumbags: Rosie, Baba Wawa, The Donald, the mean judges, the shitty contestants, the beauty queens, and pretty much everyone else in showbiz and politics. But then again I have a migraine.
Well, heck, I must admit, I like to watch the auditions. I never watch the actual competitions. It is funny and fun. Sometimes, you’re left wondering, just what the hell is wrong with these people to think they actually have a shot! But then othertimes, I am saddened because they walk away truly and clearly hurt by some of the things the judges say.
But, this should have been a matter of concern, if any, in the beginning of the show, not 3-4 seasons later. Makes no sense to whine over milk that was spilled days ago.
Oh well…Rosie was funny to me in The Flintstones…and I was about HOW old. Yeah. She was funny then. Not so now.
When I read posts like this, I always feel guilty if I reply. I haven’t turned on the television in 2 weeks and that was to watch a DVD. I just don’t like TV, so I never know anything about shows. And you’ve enlightened me, so now I can comment.
The only thing I have to say about Rosie is that I loved her in “A League of Their Own” but in general I think she’s an opinionated bigmouth and a hypocrite. I’ve never forgiven her for being mean to Tom Selleck.
Oh, and Paula Abdul is hilarious when she’s drunk.
(Hey, I watched it on YouTube.)
I don’t have a choice. Lil’ Miss insists we watch the auditions. And once you start watching you can’t tear yourself away, no matter what. Like a highway gawker. Terrible.
I did see that thing with Paula and laughed my butt off. I feel bad for the poor woman because someone let her go on air like that, but whew! I enjoyed it.
i’m totally with you. I ONLY watch AI during the auditions (if at all). I don’t feel bad at all about laughing at these people either. Nobody held a gun to their heads to audition. They WANTED to be on TV. And Rosie? Someone needs to punch her in her big, fat face.
