Remember when I inferred that a certain internet “Guru” was a spammer? Remember when I said:
No fucking doubt he paid some folks from the goddamned “Get a freelancer” site to Digg his shit until people literally puked from just seeing his name.
?
Well, I was wrong about the “Get a Freelancer” thing. I was right about people paying to get to the top.
This guy has a post up primarily taking pot-shots at Google for taking away his PageRank. I’m not the least bit concerned about that part. What is interesting about this post is that he points to another site as an example of Google’s full-blown hypocrisy.
Subvert and Profit has this in their sidebar:
Subvert and Profit
Subvert and Profit runs an ever-expanding black market for votes on social media sites. We are simultaneously the easiest way to make money online and the cheapest form of advertising in the web 2.0 sphere. We are the crowdhackers, and we are very good at what we do.
Subverting Social MediaOther “social media optimization” sites can only advise their clients on ways to design their sites for Digg and StumbleUpon. Subvert and Profit actually gets you the votes, and for cheap!
By crowdsourcing our operation to over 3000 anonymous Internet users, we can provide a cheap, effective form of undercover marketing. Read the FAQ to see how it all works.
MarketsWe currently operate markets for votes on:
Digg.com — over 1 million usersWe’ll get you on the front page, where your content can receive 10,000 to 100,000 visitors.
StumbleUpon — over 3.1 million usersStumbleUpon is a more linear traffic model than Digg, and also appeals to a much wider audience.
OMG! I cannot believe how fucking right I was. I weep for our Intertoobs. For real. Anyway, there is, of course, a place where one can sign up to get Dugg and Stumbled and another where one can sign up to be the Digger or Stumbler. You get paid 50¢ for every vote you cast. Woot! What a way to make moolah! Right? I’m all about making the dollar bills, y’all (get it? Ha!) but there’s no way I’m stooping to that dirty shit. But now I know why my little bitty posts will never make it to the front page of anything. I’m not paying for it to happen, either.
But wait! There’s more.
This person is going on about Google and it’s “EVUL”ness. He1 calls them hypocrites (in more words than that) for giving PageRank to such a nefarious site. However, the links this guy posts to Subvert and Profit? Referral links. Subvert and Profit says this about their referral program:
Referral programs
We offer two highly lucrative referral programs. You can earn 20% of the earnings of any friends you refer who work for us, and 10% of the cost of advertisements from any advertisers you refer to us.
Some users make more in referral earnings than they do voting for stories with us!
So the site “openly advertise, even brag about, the fact that their whole reason for existence is to spread spam further.”, but the guy saying all this is trying to get people to sign up under him so he can profit from the spamming. Not only that, but the site also has *OMG!* Google Ad Sense plastered all over it. I’m looking for a word here and it starts with “H” and ends with “ypocrite”, what is it? You get one guess.
Why, oh Why, was I suckered into looking at that post? I am still naive enough to think that people post their honest opinions in their blogs and not just shit that they think will get them pageviews. I am that stupid.
I did comment on his piece, only because I saw the referral (and before I saw the adsense2 ).
And you use a referral link for them? I’m not too keen on black hatters subverting the social network sites, but I knew it happened (John Chow being a prime example of how it works). It’s disgusting, really, but typical. But that referral link takes a lot away from your argument. Really. It just tells me you’re down with that.
I’m going to go spork out my eyes now and grieve for my lost innocence.
P.S.
No one tell Sour Grapes. He’ll for sure tell me “I told ya so” and give me the what-for.

I AM A FOUR!!! w00t!
What does this mean? Do I get money?
You have a delightful approach to life, and a a skillful ability to keep the reader in the palm of your hand, as they leap into the next paragraph.
Kudos!

Miz Uv,
A four means you rock socks! Of course, you knew that.
I hate spammers with a passion. I don’t mean the payperpost type of thing, that’s different, I mean the paying to vote kind of thing (and scrapers, whom I consider the scourge of the blogosphere). I weep for our blogovia.
Swan,
Are you reading the same blog that I’m writing? Well, ok, then. Thanks!
Sorry about your innocense. I too was a wild eyed optimist at your age. Now I’m a cynical optimist. Which means while I’m hopeful for the future, I’m not surprised when I find out the world is going to hell in a handbasket.
Remember when the internet was just people getting to know each other and having conversations? Or are you too young?
I’ve been around this ‘net for a long time, and it never ceases to amaze me at the folks who will do their darndest to cut a corner, cheat a person, and then brag about it.
Good on Google for stripping his page rank!
